Post arc current of vacuum interrupter after large current interruption

Abstract: Post arc current characteristics of a vacuum interrupter have been examined under a condition of a large current interruption. To measure post arc currents, a new measurement technique was developed in which a shunt for measuring post arc current was set in a synthetic test circuit voltage source. To use this method, post arc current flowing after a 20-57kA current interruption were measured. Their magnitude was greatly influenced by the rate of the current decline. Residual resistance between electrodes was c… Show more

“…The peak PAC in case I and case III are compared in figure 4, where the longer electrode separation results in larger PAC and it is independent of breaking current in figures 4(a) and (b) respectively. Similar findings were also concluded in [10], a research on large AC current interruption and [12], on DC current interruption.…”

“…Generally, a post arc current from 1 to 2 A flows in SF 6 gas insulated switching gear [4]. In contrast, in the case of the vacuum circuit breakers, the post arc current can be about 10 A or more [5]. In addition, the post arc current differs widely from the contact structure [6].…”

“…In addition, there is some research on PACM which is measured by the coaxial shunt in a high voltage circuit. The method can only be useful in a synthetic circuit and an earth-coupled interference is also existent [11][12][13]. In conclusion, there are few accurate PACMs because of earth-coupled interference, scatter of the CB, complexity of the systems and high cost.…”
