Post‐alighting responses of Mexican fruit flies (Dipt., Tephritidae) to different insecticides in paint on attractive spheres

Abstract: Two new, comparatively safe insecticides (spinosad and imidacloprid) were compared with dimethoate (each at 1.5% active ingredient) for behavioural and mortality effects on Mexican fruit¯ies, Anastrepha ludens. Insecticide was mixed with sugar (as a feeding stimulant) and yellow latex paint (as an extending agent) applied to the surface of fruit-mimicking biodegradable 7 cm spheres made of sugar,¯our and glycerin. Flies feeding on spinosadtreated spheres did not differ from¯ies feeding on untreated spheres in … Show more

“…Several authors reported the control of tephritids by exposing adults to neonicotinoids (Hu et al 1998;Prokopy et al 2000;Stelinski et al 2001 Journal of Plant Protection Research 51 (4), 2011Liburd et al 2004;Scoz et al 2004), but compounds differ in their ability to incapacitate and kill flies (Barry and Polavarapu 2005). The present study was undertaken to compare the performance of neonicotinoids which were used to kill fruit flies under laboratory conditions.…”

“…Current trends in the search for alternative strategies of fruit fly control include, amongst others, the use of bait stations that serve as population suppression devices (Haniotakis et al, 1991;Hu et al, 2000;Prokopy et al, 2000;Broumas et al, 2002), and the attraction of flies to baited applications of pesticides that must be ingested by the insect (Krasnoff et al, 1994;Mangan, 2000, 2002). The idea behind these approaches is to attract flies from a distance to the devices or pesticide applications, and to halt the flies by stimulating them to feed on the bait.…”

“…Feeding on spinosad baits resulted in high mortality for Mexican fruit ßies (Prokopy et al 2000), Caribbean fruit ßies (King and Hennessey 1996), and Mediterranean fruit ßies (Vargas et al 2002), although spinosad is not as effective as malathion. Peck and McQuate (2000) showed that bait sprays of either malathion or spinosad resulted in suppression of populations of wild Mediterranean fruit ßies; however, malathion appeared to be more effective.…”

“…However, the use of malathion has been curtailed because of public concern over its actual and perceived negative attributes, spurring the development of alternative toxicants to be used in bait sprays (Dowell 1994, USDA 1999, Prokopy et al 2000.…”
