Possible selection of viable human blastocysts after vitrification by monitoring morphological changes

Abstract: Data of the present study suggest a group of shrunken blastocysts contains many viable and clinically available embryos and time-lapse observation of vitrified-warmed blastocysts is a potential method to distinguish viable embryos from shrunken blastocysts.

“…This is globally in accord with previous reports that used comparable culture systems without cells (20–31%, Shirazi et al, ; 0–29%, Schmaltz‐Panneau et al, ; 41 ± 4.5%, Lopera‐Vasquez et al, ; 48 ± 9%, Lopera‐Vasquez et al, ). However, embryo re‐expansion may be difficult to evaluate because, over time after warming, blastocysts often show repeated collapse and re‐expansion (Maezawa et al, ; Niimura et al, ). Moreover, the duration of the re‐expansion process, if any, is highly variable among blastocysts (Ebner et al, ; Niimura et al, ).…”

“…In terms of embryo scoring, morphokinetics has taken over the leading role from pure morphological evaluation and it was only a matter of time before time-lapse data dealing with vitrified/warmed blastocysts were published [12]. This report roughly classified vitrified/warmed blastocysts by whether they had shrunk or not at 5 to 6 h after warming and then retrospectively screened the video sequences for evidence of temporary re-expansion [12].…”
