Possible role of TORCH agents in congenital malformations in Gorgan, northern Islamic Republic of Iran

Abstract: This descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out to explore the frequency of contamination with TORCH agents in neonates with congenital malformations in a referral centre in Gorgan city, Islamic Republic of Iran. Blood samples were taken from 64 neonates and their mothers over a 20-month period in 2003-04. Serologic tests showed that 4/64 infants born with congenital malformations (6%) had positive IgM antibody titres for Toxoplasma gondii (2 cases), rubella virus (1 case) and cytomegalovirus (1 case).… Show more

“…Serologic testing of both mothers and neonates could be useful for detecting malformations (Golalipour et al 2009). All antenatal cases with bad obstetric history should be routinely screened for TORCH complex as early diagnosis and appropriate intervention of the infection will help in proper management of these cases (Turbadkar et al 2003).…”

“…The higher results might be related to the wider range of age of suggestive infants included in that study as compared to this study. Higher results 20% of HCMV infection as indicated by specific IgM among symptomatic neonates was found in India (26) , while lower results 1.6% and 2% were reported among symptomatic infants in Iran and Palestine respectively using the same test (27,28) . The variation among these results and result of this study may reflect the variation of HCMV prevalence in different countries (29) .…”

“…In this study Toxoplasma specific IgM was 5.17% which correlates with the findings of Golalipour et al in Iran. They repoted 3.2% IgM anti Tox antibody 4 . But in this study no cases were infected by Toxoplasma gondi alone.…”

“…Congenital malformations caused by these pathogens are important causes of morbidity, mortality and disability and are found in approximately 2% -3% of neonates. Congenital malformations have a direct impact on the family and place a financial burden on medical, educational and support services 4 . This acronym was proposed to simplify diagnostic procedures in severely ill children and to impose clearer structure in the large differential diagnosis of congenital infections 1 .…”
