Possible relation between phytoplankton numbers and Saprolegnioid fungi in Shatt Al-Arab near Basrah, Iraq

Abstract: This study, carried out in Shatt Al-Arab river near Basrah, Iraq, reports a close negative (inverse) relation between phytoplankton numbers and decomposing fungi belonging to the family Saprolegniaceae (Oomycetes). This relation seems to depend on substrate relationship and antagonism . In addition the role of other physico-chemical factors, pH, temperature and salinity has been discussed .

“…The numbers of Bacillariophyta exceeded those of the Chlorophyta and the Myxophyta in both months . Dominance of the diatoms in the estuary was also reported by , Huq et al (1978), Al-Saadi et al (1979b), Maulood et al (1979) and Al-Saadi & Antoine (1981) . Diatom dominance was also reported in a variety of aquatic habitats in Iraq ; Maulood et al 1981 ;Saad & Antoine 1978b) .…”

“…In addition to that the deposition of petroleum hydrocarbons toward the bottom lead to increase the bacterial aggregates which feed upon them, then the biodegradation will increase in the area following the increase of oxygen and nutrients like phosphate and nitrate (Zobell and Prokop, 1966). These observations were available in Shatt Al-Arab environment (Al-Saadi et al, 1979). This is why petroleum hydrocarbons are high at winter and low at summer (Atlas, 1981).…”
