Possible economic impacts of a shutdown of the thermohaline circulation: an application of FUND

Abstract: Climate change can lead to a substantial reduction of the strength of the thermohaline circulation in the world oceans. This is often thought to have severe consequences particularly on the North Atlantic region and Northern andWestern Europe. The integrated assessment model FUND is used to estimate the extent of these impacts. The results indicate that, owing to a slower warming (rather than cooling) of the regions most affected by a thermohaline circulation collapse, climate change induced damages in these r… Show more

“…The essential features are outlined below. Version 2.8n differs from version 2.8 (Link and Tol 2004) in that version 2.8n resolves 207 countries; while version 2.8 has only 16 aggregated regions. Essentially, FUND2.8n consists of a set of exogenous scenarios on which impacts are calculated.…”

“…Population and economic growth follow the FUND scenario, which is close to the IS92a scenario (Leggett et al 1992). Carbon dioxide concentrations, global mean temperature and sea-level rise are calculated with the FUND2.8 model (Link and Tol 2004).…”

“…Such policies are currently difficult to quantify (Manning et al, 2004;. Assessment of the likely impacts of an abrupt Atlantic MOC shut-down on different economic and social sectors in Europe has been made using integrated assessment models, e.g., FUND (Tol, 2002(Tol, , 2006Link and Tol, 2004). Results suggest that the repercussions for socioeconomic factors are likely to be less severe than was previously thought.…”

“…For diarrhoea we follow Link and Tol (2004), who report the estimated relationship between mortality and morbidity on the one hand and temperature and per capita income on the other, using the WHO Global Burden of Disease data (Murray and Lopez, 1996). Martens (1997) reports the results of a meta-analysis of changes in cardiovascular and respiratory mortality for 17 countries.…”
