Possibility of Using White and Green Muscardine Fungi for Control of Cone and Seed Insect Pests

Abstract: Preconditioning of isolates of Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. and Metarrhizium anisopliae (Metch.) Sor. with specific insects increases their virulence. An isolate of B. bassiana used two years previously in pathogenicity tests against spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana Clem., required only one passage through this insect to attain 100% mortality in 48 h of incubation, whereas an isolate of M. anisopliae that was not previously used against this insect required four passages to attain the same degree … Show more

“…In contrast, Fargues & Robert (1978) demonstrated pathogenicity changes of two pathotypes of M. anisopliae after subculture or passage. Other studies (Ganhao, 1956;Hartmann & Wasti, 1974;Krejzova, 1975Krejzova, , 1977Nagaich, 1973;Wasti & Hartmann, 1975;Timonin et al 1980) also suggest that infectivity is changed following subculture or passage but these authors did not use sensitive bioassay systems to determine infectivity.…”

“…Fogal et al (1986) described a simple mass production technique for M anisopliae using wheat bran as the carrier medium. Number of carrier cum growth media such as wheat bran, (Fogal et ai, 1986, Timonin et al, 1980 sorghum grains, boiled rice grains, coffee husk, coconut water, etc. have been used for their efficacy in promoting the growth and sporulation of Manisopliae.…”

“…Wraight, Ramos, Avery, Jaronski, & Vandenberg, 2010) including several species within the family Tortricidae such as Choristoneura fumiferanae (Clemens) (Timonin et al 1980), Cydia kurokoi (Amsel) (Ihara, Toyama, Higaki, Mishwo, & Yaginuma, 2009) and Cydia pomonella (Garcia-Gutierrez, Gonzalez-Maldonado, Medrano-Roldan, & Chairez-Hernandez, 2004). Indeed, third instar C. rosaceana were found to be susceptible to 23 isolates of B. bassiana in laboratory trials (Todorova, Coderre, Vincent, & Côté 2002) in which larvae were dipped in conidia suspensions and placed on meridic diet.…”
