Possibilities and Limitations of Laser Surface Alloying by Melting of Predeposited Layers

Abstract: Abstr-brief overview of the different phenomena and problems which occur during laser surface alloying is presented in this study, for example the physical description of the different stages (melting, interdiffusion, solidification); attention is payed on limitations (especiallly concerning the realization of thick and strongly alloyed surface layers).

“…However, owing to high reflectivity to infra-red wavelength and thermal conductivity, laser treatment of brass presents a certain degree of difficulty. This leads to that the studies on the laser surface modification of copper and copper alloys are much less common than the studies on other engineering alloys [1][2][3][4].In present researches, laser cladding with pre-coating was chosen as a feasible method to overcome the absorption problem. Yet pre-coating might produce pores and high dilution rate during laser surface cladding.…”
