Positron emission tomography for the early postsurgical evaluation of pediatric brain tumors

Abstract: The early postoperative PET, especially with (11)C-methionine, appears to be a valid basis for complementary therapeutic decisions, especially second-look surgery, in glial tumors for which a radical resection is a key factor for prognosis.

“…These results suggested that MET-PET scanning is a better tool for tumor delineation than MR imaging, with not only T 1 Ϯ Gd-DTPA but also with other imaging modalities. 61 Also in the present series, the signal on FLAIR images did not correspond to accurate tumor delineation, 23 although it provided the greatest MR volume, which was more extended than the MET-PET-based volume (Class I).…”

“…Therefore, MET-PET scanning was the preferred method for nonenhanced lesions suggesting LGG. Indeed, the margins of infiltrating LGGs, which are usually ill defined on MR or CT imaging, might be better visualized with MET-PET scanning 58,61 and integrated into the neuronavigational planning.…”

“…Among amino acid PET tracers, the clinical value of MET was investigated for the early postsurgical evaluation in 20 pediatric brain tumors [34]. PET scans were typically done between 2 to 7 days after surgery.…”
