“…To limit the extent of climate change, there is a widely recognized need to tip accelerated uptake of more sustainable innovations [29,30] and early warning indicators could be used to inform when to intervene. In the energy sector, the incumbent regime of fossil fuels as backstop energy source is reinforced by subsidies and economic lock-in effects, but an alternative sustainable energy regime could also be stable, and technology transfer and an increasing carbon price could tip the energy transition [91].…”

“…This causal coupling and the resulting feedbacks can produce further tipping points [25], both realized [26] and potential [10]. Here, I argue that we can use our knowledge of tipping dynamics both to better risk-manage undesirable tipping points [27,28] and to help tip positive change [29,30], and the need for both is clear: climate change and biosphere degradation have advanced to the point where some damaging tipping points are unavoidable and avoiding others will require finding and triggering positive tipping points towards sustainability. The following sections define tipping points, consider their coupling across systems and scales, their potential for early warning signals, and how that knowledge could be combined to deliberately tip positive change.…”

“…In order to achieve the goal of limiting global warming to no more than 1.5 • C, massive concerted actions on the political, societal, and individual levels are necessary [21,108]. School can enhance not only cognitive, but also motivational and behavioral competences of students [15][16][17].…”

“…Beyond the natural sciences, the notion of adaptation tipping points is used to assess under what conditions policies are no longer able to achieve their objectives, requiring additional action (Kwadijk et al 2010, Werners et al 2013. In the transformation and transition literature, tipping points indicate transformative changes in adaptation or mitigation strategies (Wise et al 2014, David Tàbara et al 2018, Farmer et al 2019. Besides their scientific use, tipping points have become a popular metaphor to communicate climate change impacts and their far-reaching consequences to a wider audience (Russill andNyssa 2009, van der Hel et al 2018).…”
