Positive Thinking Training Intervention for Caregivers of Persons with Autism: Establishing Fidelity

Abstract: More than 3.5 million in the US are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and caregivers experience stress that adversely affects their well-being. Positive thinking training (PTT) intervention can minimize that stress. However, before testing the effectiveness of PTT, its fidelity must be established. This pilot intervention trial examined fidelity of an online PTT intervention for ASD caregivers with a random assignment of 73 caregivers to either the online PTT intervention or to the control group. “…The results of the current study are consistent with some of the similar studies (15,(25)(26)(27)(28). Meanwhile, the present study differs from those in that the positive thinking training did not have a significant effect on some areas or such subscales as physical function and bodily pain; nonetheless, all aspects of QoL were evaluated more accurately.…”

“…Indeed, caregivers of children with ASD who wrote for 15 minutes per day, for three consecutive days, about the benefits of the caregiving experience were less likely, as compared with a control group, to satisfy clinical criterion for borderline mood disorder three months later . Encouragingly, for caregivers of children with ASD that might struggle to find benefits associated with their experience, psychological interventions, particularly positive thinking training programmes (PTT), have been found to be advantageous for increasing benefit finding, as well as positive thinking (Bekhet, 2017). How the positive psychological changes fostered by these interventions predict quality of provided care might provide a foundation for future research.…”

“…Caregivers play a central role in caring for children with special needs, as without such care they could experience developmental barriers or obstacles in performing their daily activities. Although CSN caregivers improve the quality of life and welfare of parents and children (Bekhet, 2017;Ji et al, 2014), their psychological condition can reduce their ability to care for children (Lovell et al, 2014), coping abilities, and emotional support for care recipients (Liu et al, 2020). Furthermore, Chou (2000) explains that children's health condition (both physical and mental) is influenced by the physical and mental state of their parents (caregivers) and their perceptions of their child's condition.…”
