Positive secondary ion mass spectrum of poly(methyl methacrylate): a high mass resolution ToF-SIMS study

Abstract: The positive SIMS spectrum of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) has been obtained with a mass resolution in excess of 8000 and all the components assigned up to m/z 200 based on accurate mass measurements. Aspects of the interpretation of the spectrum, previously based on quadrupole SIMS data from a number of acrylic polymers, need to be revised significantly. In particular, the spectrum is dominated by oxygen‐containing fragments derived from oligomeric units rather than hydrocarbon fragments derived from the … Show more

“…Modern instruments have sufficient mass resolution to resolve the components (C x H y C , C x 1 H y 4 O C , C x 2 H y 8 O 2 C ) up to about m/z 200, although fragment identification beyond m/z 150 may become uncertain (due to the difficulty of peak centroid determination for overlapping components). 18 In the negative ion case the interference is only between oxygen-containing fragments.…”

“…In particular, high‐resolution mass spectrometry studies of bulk samples of PMMA have been extensively reported 16–18. For example, we compared our results with those for high‐resolution mass spectra obtained from thin films of PMMA 17. The strongest signals observed for such samples were at m/z 15, 41, 69 and 115.…”

“…PMMA is an important commercial polymer: its excellent transparency and relatively low cost have led to many industrial applications and also various academic studies of its chemical and thermal degradation 15. For example, we compared our results with those for high‐resolution mass spectra obtained from thin films of PMMA 17.…”

“….) and C x H 2 +Å as well as C x À and C x H À , the second set is related to the substrate, such as Si + [19,20], and those for hydrocarbons are C x H y + , which are not only adsorbed on the surface of graphene, but also migrated from the substrate to the surface. After washing with acetone at 25°C (Figs.…”

“…It can also detect extremely small amounts of impurities and provide detailed molecular information of a surface. Methacrylate ion (C 2 H 3 O 2 + ) and methoxy ion (CH 3 O À ) are characteristic ions of PMMA [19,20]. The presence or absence of these ions on a graphene surface can provide a definitive answer as to whether the surface is contaminated with PMMA.…”
