Positive impact of a tower inlet cover on natural draft dry cooling towers under crosswind conditions

Abstract: This study proposes a tower inlet cover to improve the performance of the small natural draft dry cooling tower (NDDCT) under crosswind conditions. CFD analyses are performed on a small NDDCT with tower inlet covers of different lengths, and the CFD model is validated against experimental results. The air temperature, air pressure, air flow and heat flux fields are presented, and the thermal performance for each heat exchanger and the NDDCT are obtained using CFD simulations. The CFD simulation results show th… Show more

“…The realizbale k-ε has been extensively validated for a wide range of flows including rotating shear flows, boundary layer flows and separated flows and has been shown to be well suited to modelling both short and large NDDCTs. 5,15 The governing equations can be expressed as general form: the expression of the normal∅, normalΓnormal∅,normal normalandnormal Snormal∅ in the above equation are listed in Table 1.…”

“…To date, the emphasis of much of the research on these NDDCTs has been on understanding the effect of wind speed, ambient temperature, the tower design and using windbreaks [9][10][11][12][13][14] on performance. In their study, Liu et al 15 proposed an inlet cover to improve the performance of a short NDDCT. It was shown that an inlet cover did not affect the flow within the tower at the no-wind condition.…”

“…Since the enhancement by this kind of windbreak can be achieved only when the wind direction is normal to the wall, several alternative measures have been proposed, such as installing an enclosure outside the cooling tower (Fig. 15 (b)) [72,86,107,108], installing a labyrinth structure [85] or installing a number of wind deflectors (Fig. 15 (c)) [67,87,103,[109][110][111][112][113][114][115].…”
