“…A feed‐forward regulation by Asc on the VTC2 transcript would be rather unusual, because metabolic pathways are most often negatively feedback‐regulated by their end‐products (reviewed by Farré et al ., ). However, some plant hormones, such as abscisic acid can show positive feedback regulation by activating some of its biosynthetic genes (Xiong & Zhu, ; Yang & Tan, ; Guan et al ., ). We, therefore, hypothesize that a feed‐forward loop in Asc biosynthesis enhances stress adaptation responses in Chlamydomonas .…”

“…CAMTA1 could rapidly change broad spectrum of responsive genes of membrane integrity and photosynthetic machinery for challenging drought stress in Arabidopsis 32 . The over expression of gene LcVDE in Arabidopsis can also increase tolerance to drought stress through increasing the maximum quantum yield of primary photochemistry of PSII 33 . Recently, a bHLH transcription factor PebHLH35 from Populus euphratica has been confirmed to confer drought tolerance through regulating stomatal development and photosynthesis in Arabidopsis 34 .…”

“…This was in agreement with a previous study that demonstrated the role of ABA in protecting the xanthophyll cycle pool and the photosynthetic apparatus from photo-oxidative stress [ 46 ]. More recently, a novel Lycium chinense -derived violaxanthin de-epoxidase ( LcVDE ) gene was characterized and reported to have a close correlation with drought-induced endogenous ABA accumulation [ 48 ]. The relative expression of LcVDE and the de-epoxidation rate of xanthophyll carotenoids and NPQ were found higher under drought conditions.…”

“…The relative expression of LcVDE and the de-epoxidation rate of xanthophyll carotenoids and NPQ were found higher under drought conditions. However, these elevations were reduced by the application of a potent ABA inhibitor [ 48 ]. Moreover, transgenic Arabidopsis lines expressing LcVDE showed improved drought tolerance and a slower decrease in the maximum quantum yield of primary photochemistry of PSII ( Fv/Fm ) compared to control plants [ 48 ].…”
