“…Between September 2010 and April 2014, 1127 communitydwelling elderly subjects (age Ն 60 y) were voluntarily enrolled in the Housing Environments and Health Investigation among Japanese Older People in Nara, Kansai Region, a prospective community-based cohort study (HEIJO-KYO) (24). We excluded participants from this study who did not complete measurements of physiological melatonin levels and cognitive function or mood; 1105 participants remained.…”

“…Taking in daylight through windows gives a sense of spaciousness to the occupants [24]. Moreover, recent studies show that bathing in daylight normalizes our biorhythm and contributes to health, for example, by improving sleep disorder, depression, and cognitive function; for example, see [24,25]. On the other hand, the use of daylight leads to reducing energy for illumination.…”

“…This study was a part of the Housing Environments and Health Investigation among Japanese Older People in Nara, Kansai Region (HEIJO-KYO); a prospective communitybased cohort study (14). This cohort was assembled with the cooperation of local residents' associations and elderly residents' clubs between September and April in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014, and included 1127 communitydwelling elderly individuals ($60 years).…”

“…Potential sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) was defined as sleep efficiency (total sleep time/duration in bed) ,70% and/or total sleep time (the sleep time during the in-bed period) ,5 hours, because the odds ratio for SDB is significantly higher in the elderly population who met this sleep criteria (18). Melatonin secretion was estimated by nocturnal urinary 6-sulfatoxymelatonin excretion using a highly sensitive ELISA kit (RE54031; IBL International, Hamburg, Germany), as described in our previous study (14).…”
