Portal blood flow in the presence or absence of diffuse liver disease: measurement by phase contrast MR imaging

Abstract: The measurement of PBF by phase contrast MRI is clinically useful in predicting intrahepatic or extrahepatic shunting in patients with liver cirrhosis, and may be of value in detecting the progression of stage in diffuse liver diseases.

“…The portal flow dynamics change with progression of chronic liver disease and its measurement may be of value for diagnosis and evaluation of the severity of portal hypertension [23], [44]. PV flow measured with PC-MRI was shown to change significantly after caloric intake [30], [45], [46].…”

“…The accidental injury of the LGV often occurs because of the various patterns of its inflow and its route relative to the surrounding arteries. Because the PV and SpV, which the LGV and the mesenteric vein flow into, have major blood flow [20], injury to the LGV leads to heavy blood loss and difficulty in hemostasis, even in open gastrectomy. LAG, in which a preoperative assessment of the LGV anatomy has been performed, seems to be more effective than open gastrectomy, since knowledge of the LGV anatomy prior to surgery enables surgeons to be confident in proceeding with the manipulation around the LGV.…”
