In the early days of the petroleum industry, oil infrastructure had a short lifespan. Individuals were creating their own company and competing with others, without the financial means of current great companies. Many oil facilities were established in port cities like Dunkirk, because they were the entrance gates to many nations. In the case of Dunkirk, many former oil sites became houses and schools in the current urban tissue, and official records lost track of many others. The limited data available on official records to inform the people on the pollution of their soil is a threat to their safety and health, and an obstacle for the planning strategies of public authorities. The analysis of archival documents, past and present aerial pictures, paintings and mapping techniques related to geographic information systems (GIS) can reveal lost industrial sites, and thus indicate potential pollution. This paper investigates the oil history of Dunkirk as a background for its petroleum history and its transferability to other petroleum related cities. A cross analysis of sources will attempt to complete French files and locate oil sites. The objective is to illustrate the transformation of former oil sites, and why the current land use is often not compatible with its history.

This study aims to investigate the role of the use of smart energy in logistics companies to increase technological progress, improve operation performance and lead to a green environment.Design/ methodology/ approach: Primary data were collected through a questionnaire. This questionnaire targeted 80 employees of supply chain department working at logistics companies located in Alexandria, Egypt. The collected data were analyzed through using data testing using validity and reliability, descriptive analysis, testing regression assumptions, normality test for the research variables, correlation and regression.Findings: The results succeeded to prove that the use of smart energy has a significant effect on technological progress, operation performance and green environment. Research implications/ limitations: This research provides a clear understanding to the decision makers and policy makers of the suitable ways of applying smart energy projects in the logistics companies in Alexandria, Egypt.It also shows the positive effect of smart energy projects on other variables, which encourages applying the smart energy projects, whether in the logistics companies or in other fields. Moreover, this study has a limitation regarding the sample as it depends on a sample of 80 employees at a certain context: the logistics industry.Originality: This paper adds new dimensions to the framework of smart energy, whereas previous studies only focus on the application and the usage of smart energy without focusing on its impact on other dimensions.

The aim of the research is to identify and quantify the direct sustainable effects resulting from the improved road infrastructure in the local urban-port transport system. This case study considers the city port of Szczecin (Poland). The effects are identified for the local road transport system by comparing freight road transport performance in two options: with the investment and without the investment. The sustainable effects are quantified in terms of money and physical units. Sustainable economic, social, and environmental effects concern generalized freight road transport cost, i.e., truck operating costs and costs of truck drivers’ working time, as well as freight transit time, energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and environmental savings. To capture effects, the forecast of truck traffic demand, as well as unit vehicle operating costs, values of time, and air pollution and climate change, values are elaborated and revealed in freight road transport. The investigations show that the primary effect of investment is the reduced traffic congestion, which enhance the velocity of trucks in the transport system. The increased trucks′ speed affect freight road traffic performance, time of delivery, and environmental externalities.
