The electronic properties and the molecular orientation of Zn-tetraphenyl-porphyrin films deposited on Si(111) have been investigated using synchrotron radiation. For the first time we have revealed and assigned the fine structures in the electronic spectra related to the HOMOs and LUMOs states. This is particularly important in order to understand the orbital interactions, the bond formation and the evolution of the electronic properties with oxidation or reduction of the porphyrins in supramolecular donor-acceptor complexes used in photovoltaic devices.

Tetra(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin (H 2 TPFPP) has been cocrystallized with C 60 from arene solvents to give H 2 TPFPP‚ C 60 , 1, H 2 TPFPP‚C 60 ‚8Benzene, 3, and 3H 2 TPFPP‚2C 60 ‚6Toluene, 4. Their X-ray structures have been determined to identify the supramolecular interactions that lead to tape, sheet, and prismatic packing motifs. In addition to close fullerene-porphyrin π-π interactions, attractive C-F‚‚‚H-C interactions are important in connecting the C 6 F 5 groups of one porphyrin to the pyrrole positions of a neighbor. This interaction is also seen in the structure of the free-base porphyrin H 2 TPFPP‚3p-Xylene, 2.

Metalloporphyrins are exceedingly useful building blocks for the design and synthesis of molecularly based solids. The use of hydrogen bonding or metal ion coordination provides a wide range of framework solids. Using various polyfunctionalized porphyrins, we have created porous solids that are thermally robust and that retain their internal porosity upon loss of solvates. Their pore dimensions are comparable to zeolites, and they show shape and size selectivity in sorption of guest molecules and in epoxidation of alkenes.
