Porphyrin-based hybrid silica-titania as a visible-light photocatalyst

Abstract: A silylated porphyrin derivative is co-hydrolyzed with Ti(OiPr)4 to produce a hybrid TiO2 photocatalyst, and three different ratios between porphyrin and TiO2 are made. In this way, the porphyrin fragments are held in the resulting matrix through strong Si-O-Ti covalent bonds to limit porphyrin leaching. Thanks to its photoactive character the porphyrin fragment can act as an actuator for the TiO2 to degrade organic pollutants using light from ultra-violet to the visible range. The photocatalysts are synthesiz… Show more

“…The photoactivity is thus expected to be lower than the ZnCo 2 O 4 materials (see Section 3.3). The direct and indirect band gap values for P25 are 3.42 and 2.99 eV, respectively, as previously reported [28,49]. Figure 7.…”

“…The list of doping elements in literature is long and includes transition metal ions such as Zr [14], Cu [15], Co [16], Ni [17], Cr [18], Mn [19], Mo [20], Nb [21], V [22], Fe [23], Ru [24], Au [25], Ag [26], and Pt [11], or nonmetallic ions such as N [27], S [28], C [29], B [30], P [31], I [32], and F [33]. The combination with other semiconductors, having a lower band gap energy, was also studied [34], as well as the sensitization of TiO 2 with organic or organometallic dyes [35].…”

“…For example, a series of hybrid materials was constructed with tetrapyrrole active sites and inert inorganic supports for the resolution of complicated problems. [15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22] It should be noted that solving applied problems using the material chemistry approach always requires extensive preliminary investigations. This inevitably leads to the need to elaborate novel synthetic pathways and the extension of series of known classes of macroheterocyclic compounds with optimized electronic, chemical and physicochemical properties.…”
