The microstructure of a suite of sandstone samples is quantitatively analyzed using a method which combines information from thin section micrographs of the pore space with mercury injection porosimetry in a statistical framework. This method enables the determination of a continuous distribution of pore sizes ranging from few nanometre to several hundred micrometre. The data obtained unify fractal and Euclidean aspects of the void space geometry, yield estimates of the pore-to-throat aspect ratio and challenge the ability of commonly used network models to describe fluid percolation in multiscale porous media. Application of critical path analysis to the prediction of flow permeability and electrical conductivity of sandstone core samples using the new information produces results comparable to those obtained by the classical approach-a fact attributed to the presence of macroscopic heterogeneity at the scale of several millimetres.

RESUMOCerâmicas macroporosas de alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) são estudadas devido às suas diversas aplicações como biomateriais para implantes ósseos, ânodos para célula combustível de óxido sólido, entre outras. Nesse sentido, a distribuição, tamanho e interconexão dos poros podem determinar características físicas e mecânicas dessas cerâmicas. Assim sendo, o objetivo desse trabalho foi analisar e comparar diferentes métodos de caracterizações porosimétricas em amostras macroporosas de Al 2 O 3 . Para isso, os métodos analisados foram intrusão de mercúrio (PIM), método de Arquimedes (MA), análise de micrografias (AM) e ressonância magnética nuclear com pulsos de radiofrequência Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill ( 1 H-RMN -CPMG). Amostras macroporosas de Al 2 O 3 foram obtidas pelo método de gelcasting modificado pela incorporação de esferas de polietileno, em diferentes quantidades. Os resultados foram tratados matematicamente e correlacionados pelo coeficiente de Pearson. As principais vantagens do MA foram a rapidez e a simplicidade na obtenção da porosidade aparente. No entanto, curvas de distribuição de tamanho de poros não são obtidas por esse método. As distribuições dos tamanhos dos poros obtidas por 1 H-RMN -CPMG foram semelhantes às do PIM. Essa semelhança é evidenciada pelo alto coeficiente de Pearson entre os dois métodos (r >0,962). As análises da forma e homogeneidade dos poros, bem como a porosidade aparente, foram melhores determinadas por AM. Porém, quando comparada com o método PIM, divergências quanto à distribuição de tamanho de poros foram observadas. Isso é evidenciado pelo baixo coeficiente de Pearson (r <0,048). Pode-se assim concluir que métodos não convencionais na determinação da porosidade ( 1 H-RMN -CPMG e AM) podem ser utilizados alternativamente aos convencionais (PIM e MA) na caracterização de materiais macroporosos.Palavras-chave: porosimetria, ressonância magnética, intrusão de mercúrio, análise de micrografias. Frequency-dependent NMR relaxation studies have been carried out on water (polar) and cyclohexane (nonpolar) molecules confined inside porous ceramics containing variable amounts of iron oxide (III). The porous ceramics were prepared by compression of powders mixed with iron oxide followed by thermal treatment. The pore size distribution was estimated using a technique based on diffusion in internal fields that exposed a narrow distribution of macropore sizes with an average pore dimension independent of iron oxide content. The relaxation dispersion curves were obtained at room temperature using a fast field cycling NMR instrument. They display an increase of the relaxation rate proportional to the iron oxide concentration. This behavior is more prominent at low Larmor frequencies and is independent of the polar character of the confined molecules. The results reported here can be fitted well with a relaxation model considering exchange between molecules in the close vicinity of the paramagnetic centers located in the surface and bulk-like molecules inside the pores. This model allows the extraction of the transverse diffusional correlation time that can be related to the polar character of the confined molecules.
