The fracture gradient is a critical parameter for drilling mud weight design in the energy industry. A new method in fracture gradient prediction is proposed based on analyzing worldwide leak-off test (LOT) data in offshore drilling. Current fracture gradient prediction methods are also reviewed and compared to the proposed method. We analyze more than 200 LOT data in several offshore petroleum basins and find that the fracture gradient depends not only on the overburden stress and pore pressure, but also on the depth. The data indicate that the effective stress coefficient is higher at a shallower depth than that at a deeper depth in the shale formations. Based on this finding, a depth-dependent effective stress coefficient is proposed and applied for fracture gradient prediction. In some petroleum basins, many wells need to be drilled through long sections of salt formations to reach hydrocarbon reservoirs. The fracture gradient in salt formations is very different from that in other sedimentary rocks. Leak-off test data in the salt formations are investigated, and a fracture gradient prediction method is proposed. Case applications are examined to compare different fracture gradient methods and validate the proposed methods. The reasons why the LOT value is higher than its overburden gradient are also explained.

Predykcja ciśnień porowych w otworach wiertniczych przewiercających dolnopaleozoiczne formacje łupkowe basenu bałtyckiego -północna Polska W niniejszej pracy przedstawiono wyniki analizy ciśnienia porowego przy wykorzystaniu powszechnie stosowanych w przemyśle naftowym metod predykcji ciśnienia porowego, dostępnych na platformie specjalistycznego oprogramowania. Analizę ciśnień porowych przeprowadzono w niemal pełnym interwale czterech otworów wiertniczych przewiercających perspektywiczny interwał łupków dolnego paleozoiku zdeponowanych w południowej części basenu bałtyckiego. Wyniki analizy pozwoliły na wskazanie poziomów o podniesionym ciśnieniu porowym, których przewiercanie może wią-zać się z komplikacjami wiertniczymi, a nawet prowadzić do utraty stabilności ściany odwiertu.Słowa kluczowe: ciśnienie porowe, niekonwencjonalne formacje łupkowe, strefy podniesionego ciśnienia porowego, naprężenia efektywne, model geomechaniczny.Pore pressure prediction in the lower Paleozoic shale formation in the Baltic Basin, North Poland This paper presents the results of the pore pressure prediction conducted in almost the entire profile, of four boreholes, drilled through perspective intervals of the lower Paleozoic shales deposited in the southern part of the Baltic Basin. The Pore pressure prediction, was carried out with the use of Eaton and Bowers methods, which are commonly used methods in the oil and gas industry. The results of the analysis allowed to identify overpressure zones, which may lead to drilling complications and even wellbore instability issues.Key words: Pore pressure, unconventional shale formation, overpressure zones, effective stress, geomechanical modeling.Ciśnienie porowe i stabilność ściany otworu odwiertu stanowią niekiedy poważne wyzwanie podczas wiercenia otworów wiertniczych, zwłaszcza w strefach spodziewanego występowania podwyższonego ciśnienia porowego. Brak predykcji ciśnienia porowego wprowadza element niepewności przy doborze gęstości płynu wiertniczego, mogący prowadzić do wielu niepożądanych komplikacji podczas wiercenia, takich jak erupcje wiertnicze (ang. blowouts), niekontrolowany wypływ płynów złożowych (ang. kicks), wymycia ściany odwiertu (ang. washouts), powstanie stref zniszczenia w mechanizmie ścinania i rozciągania (ang. breakouts and drilling induced fractures) czy zakleszczenie rury wiertniczej (ang. stuck pipe). Pojawienie się wspomnianych komplikacji wiertniczych najczęściej wpływa na wydłuże-nie czasu operacyjnego, podniesienie kosztów wiercenia, a niejednokrotnie wymagało opuszczenia otworu wiertniczego. Wymienionych wyżej komplikacji można uniknąć bądź mocno je ograniczyć poprzez wprowadzenie elementu rzetelnej analizy warunków wiercenia, w tym analizy ciśnień porowych. The search for hydrocarbons has gone beyond shallow hydrostatic reservoirs, necessitating deep drilling beyond known depths in the mature Onshore Niger Delta fields. Often times, the challenge has been the ambiguity in pore pressure prediction beyond the shallow depths where disequilibrium compaction is no longer the active overpressure contributor. This leads to underbalanced drilling with the implication that well drilling is terminated at the occurrence of the first kick, before reaching the target depth. Thus, in this study, the dominant overpressure mechanism is determined by the analyses of velocity, density versus depth cross-plots. The Eaton empirical approach, equivalent depth method (EDM), a deterministic approach, and Bowers velocity-vertical effective stress (Vp-VES) relationship were applied to Vp-sonic log to compare prediction profiles. Pressure data were used to infer geologically consistent Eaton's exponents and Vp-VES curve for loading and unloading scenarios. The results show that deeper than the approximately 11,000 ft where unloading began, EDM and Eaton's exponent of 3.0 would fail. However, higher exponents can be adopted for the area at onset of unloading temperatures ranging from 98 to 100°C. The estimated shale pressure profile from the EDM, Eaton's exponents and Vp-VES models accurately fit the measured pressure data. In that way, the uncertainty in the prediction can be quantified. Hence, predrill estimates of shale pressures can be generated beyond known depths since the model can be used to transform seismic velocity to formation pressure, thereby ensuring better anticipation of potential risks and cost-effective drilling.
