Pore Connectivity Characteristics and Controlling Factors for Black Shales in the Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation, Southeastern Sichuan Basin, China

Abstract: Investigations into the connectivity and complexity of pore systems in shales are essential for understanding the flow of shale gas and the capacities of the associated reservoirs. In the present study, eight shale samples from the Wufeng-Longmaxi (WF-LMX) Formation that were collected from Well Yucan-6 in the southeast of the Sichuan Basin were analyzed for microstructural, pore network, and pore connectivity characteristics. The measurement results of low-pressure nitrogen adsorption illustrated that all sha… Show more

“…Wetted coal particles have gas cavities in the surface pores and cracks. These also affect the dynamics of interaction with liquid droplets [45]. With such cavities, the stain of the contact of liquid with a coal particle is much smaller than in the case of the surface without pores.…”

“…The marl comprehensive pore distribution can be reflected by the NMR T 2 spectrum (Wu et al, 2021;Zhao et al, 2022). The T 2 spectrum of laminated marl revealed clear bimodal characteristics (Figure 9A), and the right peak was more noticeable, indicating that laminated marl developed not only nanometer micropores but also a certain amount of micrometer macropores.…”

“…Long 1 submember-1 is dominated by deep-water shelf phase deposits, developing black siliceous shales and carbonaceous shales, with common pyrite nodules and penstones. These transition to semi-deep water shelf phase deposits upward to the Long 1 submember-2, over 100 m thick, with gray and black shale dominating the lithology. …”
