“…This would support observations in Mancuso, et al 33 Although considered a relatively inert material, a rejection response has been documented in both small and large animals. In patient 6, adjustment of the topical NSAID was adequate to resolve the inflammation while the uveitis was completely unresponsive in the other.…”

“…There have been limited reports using porcine intestinal submucosa implantation in equine corneal surgery. 2,28,29,33 In one report, three patients were treated for DSA with a penetrating keratoplasty, SIS implant, and conjunctival graft. All three patients retained functional vision, with anterior synechiae, posterior synechiae, and subcapsular cataract formation.…”

“…However, conjunctival tissue remains at the site of graft, resulting in a permanent corneal opacity (Mancuso et al . ). While this may be tolerable in small lesions it can significantly impair vision when large grafts are required.…”

“…Clinical reports have demonstrated its benefits for corneal repair, which are similar to those achieved with conjunctival autografts, but with less post‐operative complications (Mancuso et al . ).…”

It is eventually degraded and replaced with host tissue; when used as a sole therapy this may be associated with less post‐operative discomfort and corneal scarring, although further studies are necessary to support these claims.…”
