Porcelain crabs (Crustacea: Decapoda: Anomura) of western coast of India

Abstract: Background: Significant works have been done on the diversity and distribution of porcellanids crabs in Indian coasts. The present work reports and describe porcelain crabs from the western coast of India. Result: Five species of porcelain crabs in three genera are reported from the western coast of India. Morphological descriptions with measurement of the reported species with key characters and distribution status are given. Conclusion: Petrolisthes boscii (Audouin, 1826), P. lamarckii (Leach, 1820), and P. … Show more

“…All samples were preserved with formaldehyde solution with a concentration of 10% and placed in a sample box. Macrobenthos identification was performed by comparing the morphology of samples with the standard mollusk identification book in Indonesia, such as Mollusc (Dharma, 2005) (Beleem et al, 2016) with the nomenclature written by Mollusca Base (https://www.molluscabase.org/). These comparisons identified all macrobenthos specimens at the Aquatic Resources Laboratory, Universitas Padjadjaran.…”

“…
The Pebble crabs or nut crabs belong to Leucosiid crabs, are the common inhabitant of sub-littoral coastal areas. The crabs of genus Ryphilia mainly, Ryphila cancellus (Herbst, 1783) are common and have worldwide distribution along the intertidal areas of Indo-pacific region, including Pakistan (Alcock 1896;Tirmizi and Kazmi, 1988;Beleem et al, 2016). Due to morphological similarities with other species of the same family, the identification based on the taxonomical assessment is quite challenging due to overlapping.

“…Mustaquim (1972), Ahmed and Mustaquim (1974), Kazmi and Siddiqui (2006) has carried out valuable work on the distribution and diversity of Porcellanids from Northern Arabian Sea. Beleem et al (2016) pronounced the five species of porcelain crabs from Gujarat. In present study, the molecular identification of the two species of genus Petrolisthes: Petrolisthes ornatus and P. boscii have been done based on the mt-DNA Cytochrome oxidase I gene this DNA barcode gene utilized for species identification.…”
