Population systems of Eurasian water frogs (Pelophylax) in the south of Ukraine

Abstract: Ecological and evolutionary consequences of population-genetic processes that occur because of natural cross-species hybridization can show mechanisms of overcoming the reproductive barrier and obtaining the species status by a hybrid taxon. This is clearly seen in the population systems of Eurasian water frogs – Pelophylax esculentus complex. The P. esculentus (E) hybrid usually discards one of the parental genomes of P. lessonae (L) or P. ridibundus (R) and reproduces semi-clonally. The genetic structure and… Show more

“…The composition of HPSs is always connected to peculiarities of hybrid P. esculentus gametogenesis [15]. Hybrids can produce gametes of both parental species separately or simultaneously, they can also produce diploid gametes of different genomic composition, a mixture of haploid and diploid gametes, as well as gametes with partially recombinant genomes [3,8,9,23].…”

“…The Lower Dnipro is known for its refugia, isolated local populations of forest species refugia, isolated local populations of forest species. Rare and endangered species are found here, as well as amphibian population systems unique to the south (Suriadna & Mykytynets, 2018;Suriadna et al, 2020). All of this was destroyed during the dam subversion.…”

“…This may eventually eliminate single or double genomes in the triploids or either genome in P. kl. esculentus (in Ukraine and Poland) [ 29 , 30 , 31 , 32 ]. Through the substantial volume of research, we have learned about the hybridogenetic mechanisms in P. kl.…”
