Population structure of the glasshouse whitefly Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) shows multiple introductions to the U.K.

Abstract: 1 Whiteflies are major pests of many crops worldwide. Trialeurodes vaporariorum was introduced into the U.K. approximately 160 years ago. In the present study, we aimed to understand their genetic diversity and population structure and thus their invasion history. 2 Mitochondrial CO1 sequencing showed that T. vaporariorum had a low level of variation. Microsatellite analysis showed a high diversity and indicated the presence 2, 6 and 10 clusters, which were, to a limited extent, linked to locations but not to … Show more

“…PCR was performed using species‐specific markers for the 16S rRNA genes in Portiera, Wolbachia , Rickettsia, Hamiltonella , and Cardinium and the 23S rRNA genes in Arsenophonus and Fritschea (Table S2) (Kapantaidaki et al, ). The protocol for PCR amplification was as described above for the mtCO1 sequencing (Kareem et al, ). To check the quality of the DNA samples that showed no PCR products for symbiotic bacteria, we tested for the primary endosymbiont P. aleyrodidarum using primers for the 16S rRNA gene (518F and 799R Chelius & Triplett, ).…”

“…Genomic DNA (gDNA) from adult whitefly was extracted, as described in Tsagkarakou, Tsigenopoulos, Gorman, Lagnel, and Bedford (2007) (see also Kareem, Port, & Wolff, 2019). Mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit one (mtCOI) of three individuals of B. tabaci from each population was sequenced (a total of 42 sequences).…”

“…As a result, the intensity of photosynthesis decreases, the content of chlorophyll changes the colour of the leaves (Park andLee, 2002& Abdellseid et al, 2014). The infested cell can be more damaging to plants when infested with insects pests at the same time such as whitefly and aphids (Kareem et al, 2019). Currently, a chemical method is considered the most effective for controlling the spider mite T. urticae, especially abamectin a microbial derivative-based acaraicide and other synthetic insecticides such as organophosphorous and pyrethroids in Egypt.…”
