Population structure, length-weight and length-length relationships of six populations of the Bartail Flathead Platycephalus indicus (Scorpaeniformes: Platycephalidae) along the Persian Gulf coastal waters

Abstract: The size frequency distribution for age structure, lengthweight (LWR) and length-length (LLR) relationships of six populations of Platycephalus indicus along the Persian Gulf coastal waters in Iran are reported. A total of 180 P. indicus specimens were studied from six localities including Charak, Bandar-Abbas, Shif, Motaf, Khur-Musa and Bahrekan. The maximum standard length recorded for the studied populations ranged between 300 to 510 mm and the b values of the length-weight relationships ranged between 3.0 … Show more

“…It is well known that the functional regression b value represents the body form of fish (Kalayci, Samsun, Bilgin, & Samsun, ; Mousavi‐Sabet, Heidari, Fekrandish, ; Ricker, ), and is affected by a number of factors such as gonad maturity, sex, diet, stomach fullness, health, age, and fishing time, as well as the area and fishing vessels (Mousavi‐Sabet, Homayouni, et al., ; Mousavi‐Sabet, Heidari, Paknejad, ; Wootton, ); however, these factors were not considered in the present study. The narrow sample size and/or the length range possibly affected the b values of the study.…”

“…Fish LWRs are useful for converting length observations into weight estimates to provide some measure of biomass (Froese, , ; Mousavi‐Sabet, Heidari, & Fekrandish, ). This information is necessary for area fisheries management as well as for estimation of the biomass of the fish species (Froese, ; Mousavi‐Sabet, Heidari, & Paknejad, ).…”

“…Fish length–weight relationships (LWRs) are useful for converting length observations into weight estimates to provide some measure of biomass (Froese, , ; Mousavi‐Sabet, Heidari, & Vatandoust, a; Mousavi‐Sabet, Homayouni, Marjani, & Heidari, ). This information is necessary for fisheries management in the area as well as for estimation of the biomass of the fish species (Froese, ; Mousavi‐Sabet, Heidari, & Fekrandish, ; Mousavi‐Sabet, Heidari, Mohamadi‐Darestani, Mansouri‐Chorehi, & Ghasemzadeh, ). The length–length relationships (LLRs) are used to convert length measurements from one length‐type into another (Froese, , ; Mousavi‐Sabet, Heidari, & Vatandoust, b).…”
