Population size of pallid sturgeon, Scaphirhynchus albus (Forbes & Richardson, 1905), in the lower Missouri River near Kansas City, Missouri, USA

Abstract: The objectives of this study were to investigate the population size of hatchery-reared and wild pallid sturgeon, Scaphirhynchus albus (Forbes & Richardson, 1905), in a 43.3 river kilometer (rkm) reach of the Missouri River downstream of Kansas City, Missouri, USA and compare these with previous published estimates. This reach has been shown to represent the abundance and distribution of the pallid sturgeon population throughout the lower Missouri River, and was therefore chosen for this study in order to moni… Show more

“…Population estimates by Steffensen et al. () in an 80.5 rkm reach below the Platte River and Winders and Steffensen () in a 43.3 rkm reach downstream of Kansas City, MO support this decreasing downstream population trend. Overall, estimates for hatchery‐reared population are three to six times higher and wild population estimates are approximately ten times higher in the upstream study area (Steffensen et al., ).…”

“…This same combination of data was used to develop the first regional population estimates for pallid sturgeon in the Lower Missouri River ( fig. 2B) (Steffensen and others, 2012;Winders and Steffensen, 2014). The PSPAP data also have been used to characterize pallid sturgeon demographics, such as gender ratio, age-at-maturity, fecundity, reproductive readiness others, 2013a, 2013b), and growth (Shuman and others, 2011).…”

“…Similarly, the section downstream from the Kansas River confluence showed a positive correlation between proportion of "skinny fish" and the relative abundance of adult sized pallid sturgeon (r=0.67, p=0.011; table 20). Winders and Steffensen (2014) determined that the Ictaluridae species were the most important prey in the Lower Missouri River for subadult and adult pallid sturgeon. Evidence of the importance of Ictalurid prey relationships is questionable because we determined a significant positive correlation (r=0.74, p=0.005) in the relative abundance of blue catfish and proportion of "skinny" subadult pallid sturgeon, and in the 1-year offset (r=0.75, p=0.004).…”
