Population Parameters and Growth of Riptortus pedestris (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Alydidae) under Fluctuating Temperature

Abstract: In this study, we determined the influence of fluctuating temperatures on the development and fecundity of the bean bug Riptortus pedestris (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Alydidae) by collecting life table data for individuals exposed at a constant temperature (24 °C) and three fluctuating temperatures (24 ± 4 °C, 24 ± 6 °C, and 24 ± 8 °C). The raw life history data were analyzed using an age-stage, two-sex life table to take into account the viable development rate among individuals. Based on these analyses, the pop… Show more

“…The Hemiptera are composed of a large group of phytophagous and predaceous species and are considered to be major crop pests worldwide (McPherson 2018). In East Asia, including China, Japan, and Korea, the bean bug, Riptortus pedestris (Fabricius, 1775) (Hemiptera: Alydidae), has long been one of the most destructive pests of leguminous crops (Kho et al 2019;Li et al 2019;Ahn & Choi 2022). The bean bug directly damages soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.)…”

“…Insect mortality, fertility, and lifespan may all be affected by environmental variables, including heat, pesticides, and secondary plant metabolites. Demographic toxicology, or the life table, is useful for assessing these impacts [ 35 , 36 , 37 , 38 ]. The conventional life table focused only on the female population and overlooked the male population.…”

“…Compared to our results seen with constant temperature, the interaction between temperature amplitudes and imidacloprid markedly affected the intrinsic rate of increase. Under the wide temperature amplitude, imidacloprid was associated with a high intrinsic rate of increase, due to the short adult longevity and increased early fecundity ( Ahn and Choi., 2022 ). In conclusion, both the individual fitness of the adult and the response of population growth to positive temperature coefficient insecticides were considerably affected by the temperature amplitude.…”
