Population parameters and damage of Polyphagotarsonemus latus (Acari: Tarsonemidae) in Valencia orange (Citrus sinensis [L.] Osbeck) crop

Abstract: Polyphagotarsonemus latus is one a major pest of Valencia orange in Colombia. To study its biology, it was established an experiment on young leaves of the Valencia orange at 25 ± 5°C, 70 ± 5% RH, and 12:12 L:D photoperiod. To characterize the nature of damage caused by this mite on leaves and young fruits, a trial in screenhouse conditions using young leaf and small fruits (0.1 -0.3 cm in diameter) and fruits between 1.0-3.0 cm in diameter, which were infested with 5, 15 and 30 adult females of P. latus, was … Show more

“…This herbivore has a large host range, comprising plants in more than 60 botanical families including Rutaceae (Gerson, 1992). Indeed, P. latus is considered as one of the most important citrus pests worldwide (Imbachi et al, 2012;Rodríguez et al, 2017). Broad mites attack actively growing plant parts (e.g.…”

“…were observed in both cases 48 h after infestation, contrary to T. urticae, sour orange appeared as the most susceptible rootstock, as it sustained higher populations of this mite. Rodríguez et al (2017) observed first symptoms of leaf damage by P. latus in Valencia orange plants between 7.0 and 11.8 days after infestation. However, in our case it took longer.…”

“…El dany es caracteritza per la malformació dels teixits en creixement (fulles, brots i flors), provocant l'arrugament, l'enrotllament i la caiguda de les fulles (Gerson 1992). El dany al fruit es produeix a les zones d'ombra a l'interior dels arbres i pot passar desapercebut però si l'atac és sever, pot provocar la decoloració i la caiguda del fruit (Rodríguez et al 2017).…”
