Population norms for the EQ-5D-3L: a cross-country analysis of population surveys for 20 countries

Abstract: This study provides EQ-5D population norms for 20 countries (N = 163,838), which can be used to compare profiles for patients with specific conditions with data for the average person in the general population in a similar age and/or gender group. Descriptive EQ-5D data are provided for the total population, by gender and by seven age groups. Provided index values are based on European VAS for all countries, based on TTO for 11 countries and based on VAS for 10 countries. Important differences exist in EQ-5D r… Show more

“…For instance, only 37% reported that daily life was filled with things that interest him/her and 44% indicated that he/she felt calm and relaxed all or most of the time. These findings are congruent with EQ-5D data of the general population in which 35% reported to have moderate or severe problem in the anxiety/depression dimension of the EQ-5D-3L [42]. Expected deterioration of mental well-being for future ages was especially remarkable in the 'feel cheerful and in good spirits' and 'feel active and vigorous' dimensions ( Table 3).…”

“…While no normative data for the AQoL-4D are available from the United Kingdom, a national comparison of population norms on a different scale revealed slightly higher QOL in the United Kingdom than in New Zealand. 33 Data on educational background revealed that participants with higher levels of education had better QOL. There is some evidence that this association is mediated by lower levels of emotional and physical distress in the better educated, largely brought about by higher personal control over employment and economic resources.…”

“…[15][16][17] However, none of these papers reported utilities based on responses to the EQ-5D questionnaire, which is the preferred patient-reported outcome measure used to calculate utilities required for health economic evaluation. 11 Because of this lack of EQ-5D results in the published literature, utilities were extrapolated from the general population 18 with pre-diagnosis anxiety-related decrements applied based on relative literature values. [15][16][17] Further information and a detailed list of input parameters and data sources are available from the authors on request.…”

“…Furthermore, QoL data were not collected routinely as part of the RDC process. Utilities had to be extrapolated from the general population 18 with decrements applied based on relative literature values. [15][16][17] Although this was deemed the best available approach, this amount of data manipulation may have introduced bias.…”
