Population Genetic Studies on Nine Aboriginal Ethnic Groups of Taiwan. I. Red Cell Enzyme Systems.

Abstract: Population genetic study of nine aboriginal ethnic groups of Taiwan (Ami, Atayal, Bunun, Paiwan, Puyuma, Rukai, Saisiat, Tsou, and Yami) was carried out. Twelve red cell enzymes (AcP, AK, CA1, CA2, EsD, GLO, GPT, GOT, LDH, MDH, PGD, and PGM1) were analyzed by isoelectric focusing method and starch gel electrophoretic method. Six loci (AcP, EsD, GLO, GPT, PGD, and PGM1) were polymorphic. Three alleles (PGM1*6, GPT*6, and EsD*7) were in relatively higher allele frequencies in Taiwan aboriginal populations, and w… Show more

“…The population of Taiwan is largely comprised of early immigrants from mainland China from the 17th century and recent immigrants after World War II, whereas the aboriginal population accounts for around 1.5% of the total population (Jin et al 1999;Lin et al 2000). Although there are several hypotheses regarding the origin of these aboriginal people, none has gained general acceptance (Melton et al 1998;Jin et al 1999). As shown in Fig.…”

“…There are many theories surrounding the peopling of these islands and no single one enjoys full approval (Jin et al 1999). Both archeological and linguistic data indicate that Austronesian-speaking populations were responsible for this expansion (Diamond 1988).…”

“…There are nine tribal groups that currently constitute the aboriginal population of Formosa: Ami, Atayal, Bunun, Paiwan, Puyama, Rukai, Saisiya, Tsou, and Yami (Jin et al 1999). They comprise approximately 1.5% of Taiwan's total population which currently numbers 21 million (Chu 1997;Jin et al 1999).…”
