Population Genetic Structure of Endemic and Endangered Yellow Catfish, Horabagrus brachysoma, Using Allozyme Markers

Abstract: The allozyme variation and population genetic structure of Horabagrus brachysoma in three natural populations from the southern part of the Western Ghats region, India, were investigated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Variations at 14 loci from 14 enzyme systems were analyzed. The allozyme analysis revealed a high level of genetic variation in this species, with an average of observed alleles per locus of 2.357 and observed heterozygosity of 0.178. The positive value of the fixation index (F IS = 0.507… Show more

“…Lack of definite information on the genetic make-up or stock of fish fauna of a river system is impeding the planning and implementation of proper conservation and management strategies. We have reported the stock structure and genetic variation in another species of the genus (H. brachysoma) from different populations using allozymes, RAPD, and microsatellite markers (Muneer et al 2007(Muneer et al , 2008(Muneer et al , 2009), but information on the life history traits, stock structure, and basic genetic profile of H. nigricollaris is lacking.…”

“…Studies pertaining to lengthweight relationship (Sunilkumar et al, 1999;Anvar et al, 2008), food and feeding (Sreeraj et al, 2006;Padmakumar et al, 2009), population genetics (Muneer et al, 2007), thermal tolerance (Dalvi et al, 2009) and seed production (Bindu and Padmakumar, 2008) of H. brachysoma have been reported. Controlled breeding and culture of a particular species is linked to its critical life history parameters such as food and feeding, fecundity, reproductive period (through the gonadosomatic index), oocyte size distribution and other parameters.…”

Despite some reports (Kurian and Inasu, 2003;Padmakumar et al, 2004), a detailed study on the reproductive biology of this species in particular is missing from the high biodiversity area of the Western Ghats.…”
