Population genetic structure of endangered Mongolian racerunner (Eremias argus) from the Korean Peninsula

Abstract: The Mongolian racerunner (Eremias argus) is a small lacertid lizard species, and its distribution range encompasses the Korean Peninsula, Mongolia, China and Russia. Eremias argus is widespread, but populations on the Korean Peninsula are small and declining, provoking concerns that genetic diversity is being lost. This species is currently listed under the Protection of Wild Fauna and Flora Act in South Korea. In this study, nine novel microsatellites for E. argus were developed with a biotin-enrichment metho… Show more

“…However, the populations have been declining with the years. The Mongolian racerunner (Eremias argus) is a small lacertid lizard species, which is distributed widely in China, Korea, Mongolia, and Russia. , However, its populations in Korea are small and decreasing, and Eremias argus has been listed under the Protection of Wild Fauna and Flora Act in South Korea . As compared to a previous survey in 1991, six species of reptiles including Eremias argus were not found in Songshan Nature Reserve, Beijing, from 2009 to 2010 .…”

“…Both E. argus and T. amurensis are from the Lacertidae, with the primary food being the larvae and adults of insects ( Zhao and Adler, 1993 ; Zhao et al, 1999 ). The thermal biology and distribution of E. argus and T. amurensis indicate that they are cold-climate species ( Zhao et al, 2008 ; Park et al, 2014 ; Li et al, 2017 ; Hao et al, 2020 ).…”

“…In 2014, Park et al developed nine novel Argus microsatellites in the Korean Peninsula using biotin enrichment technology in order to understand the population's genetic structure and define the protection unit of Mongolian racerunner (a small lizard). Using Bayesian structure analysis, the authors observed that the habitat of lizards highly overlapped with the pesticide application area, and their population size was severely decreasing [98]. In 2017, Zhu et al reported that long-term exposure to endocrine disruptors may affect the growth and development of animals.…”
