Population fluctuations of lepus flavigularis (lagomorpha: leporidae) at tehuantepec isthmus, Oaxaca, México

Show more

“…Specimens of L. altamirae have not been collected in more than 100 years and this species may have suffered a reduction in distribution similar to or greater than experienced by L. flavigularis (Lorenzo et al, 2008) and L. callotis, the latter species having been replaced over much of its range by L. californicus (Anderson, 1972;Brown et al, 2018).…”

“…The increase of human settlements, the bad land management, and lack of control of productive activities, such as extensive ranching and the burning of pastures for seasonal agriculture have resulted in habitat loss and fragmentation in the study area (Lorenzo et al, 2008;Rioja et al, 2011;Carrillo-Reyes et al, 2012). Although porcupines are not hunted, their habitat (semi-deciduous forest and palms and tropical dry forest) is disappearing at an accelerated rate due to excessive logging to expand the sorghum planting land area (J.…”

“…Rioja et al (2008) recently reported that the Tehuantepec jackrabbit has a polygamous mating behavior in which a male mate with several females. It is likely that, due to a higher population density found in our study area than for other populations, males of Santa María del Mar need to travel shorter distances to fi nd mates, an assumption supported by information on population density: Santa María del Mar is the Tehuantepec jackrabbit population with the highest density values ever recorded for this species (12 ind/km 2 ; Vargas 2000), while other populations range from 0.76 to 9.5 ind/km 2 at Montecillo Santa Cruz, and 8.9 ind/km 2 at San Francisco del Mar (Sántiz, 2002;Sántiz, 2005;Lorenzo et al, 2008). Nelson (1995) found that at high densities of females, M. agtestis males have smaller home ranges than they do at lower female densities.…”
