Six monitoring plots were established in the northern part of West Java, Indonesia, to clarify the factors that influence population fluctuations of the whitefly, Bemisia tabaci. Yellow sticky traps were used to monitor adult populations. To examine the relationship between the population fluctuations and the quantity of food resources, the quantity of food resources of B. tabaci (i.e. soybean and mung bean) was also investigated routinely in each subdistrict where the experimental plot was located. The maximum number of adults per trap in each sowing season showed a similar noticeable seasonal trend in all experimental plots. Climatic factors did not have a major role to play in population fluctuations. The number of adults per trap in each experimental plot tended to increase when the quantity of food resources in each subdistrict increased. The changes of the quantity of food resources seemed to influence the population fluctuations. It is suggested that the operation of regulatory processes in population density is influenced largely by both the distance between habitat patches and the amplitude of temporal fluctuations of the quantity of food resources. An explanation for why the time lag between fluctuations of the quantity of food resources and the number of individuals of B. tabaci occurred is discussed. Based on their flight ability and intrinsic rate of natural increase, B. tabaci is considered not to be a serious pest in the environment where the host plants are grown discontinuously in time and space.

Heterogeneity among individuals in a population is one of the important factors that influence the rate of population spread. To incorporate the population heterogeneity into dispersal rate, we assume that the traveling duration varies following a gamma distribution with a shape parameter k, where (1/k) indicates the heterogeneity in the traveling duration. The resultant distribution of the traveling distance, which is called dispersal function, is then expressed by using a modified Bessel function of the second kind of order (k Ϫ 1). It is shown that the front of the distribution spreads with time in an accelerated manner during an early phase of expansion if the heterogeneity is sufficiently large, which is consistent with the results from previous studies of biological invasions. By using the data obtained from mark-recapture experiments using traps, we can obtain the maximum likelihood estimates of three parameters: heterogeneity in the traveling duration, which is defined by (1/k); the mean dispersal ability, which is defined by the product of the diffusion coefficient and the mean traveling duration; and the trap efficiency. The usefulness of this model is shown by using the data of mark-recapture experiments with the common cutworm, Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

Estimation of dispersal distance by mark‐recapture experiments using traps: correction of bias caused by the artificial removal by traps

Although in mark‐recapture experiments traps are useful to estimate the dispersal distance of organisms, they cause a dilemma that may be called a kind of Heisenberg effect: a large number of traps should be placed to yield a precise estimate of mean dispersal distance, while these traps shorten the mean dispersal distance itself by intercepting organisms that should have dispersed for further distances. We propose a procedure to solve this dilemma by placing traps uniformly in a lattice pattern, and by assuming a random movement and a constant rate of settlement for organisms. We applied this procedure to estimate the dispersal distance of the sugarcane wireworm Melanotus okinawensis Ohira (Coleoptera: Elateridae). The estimated mean dispersal distance was 143.8 m. Through the use of a conventional method of estimation, the mean dispersal distance was estimated to be 118.1 m. Thus, it was shown that the conventional estimate of dispersal distance was 18% smaller than the corrected estimate in our experiment.
