Population biology of the freshwater shrimpParatya curvirostris(Heller, 1862) (Decapoda: Atyidae)

Abstract: The life history of the endemic New Zealand freshwater shrimp Paratya curvirostris (Heller, 1862) (Decapoda: Atyidae) in 3 streams in North Canterbury is described. Each female carried on average 2000(±634) eggs and incubation took about 28 days at 14-18°C. Mixohaline planktonic larvae were found in the Ashley Estuary and in small numbers in fresh water. Post-larvae had a carapace length of 0.5-1.5 mm, and most developed into males which occurred in freshwater streams. At a carapace length of 5.0-6.0 mm males … Show more

“…males, as found in L. virentova, has been reported for the alvinocaridids Alvinocaris stactophila (Brine Pool cold seep; Copley and Young 2006) and Rimicaris hybisae (Von Damm and Beebe vent fields; Nye et al 2013a). As fecundity and investment per gamete are positively correlated with female size in many shrimp species (Carpenter 1983;Bauer 1991;Terossi and Mentelatto 2010;Nye et al 2013a), this trait may be advantageous in maximising fitness.…”

“…Paratya (shrimp) and Collembola were removed from the data set before MDS analyses. Paratya were not included because they migrate to the sea for the development of early life stages, and their presence is influenced by physical barriers (natural and constructed) and distance from the sea (Carpenter 1983). Paratya was only found at the SB reference site (SBR).…”

“…Many native fish species (McDowall 1990) and the New Zealand freshwater shrimp Paratya curvirostris (Carpenter 1983) depend upon access to the sea to complete their life cycles. Although many native fish are good climbers, rural ponds often have outlet structures that are a significant barrier to the passage of climbing and non-climbing native fish species (Boubée et al 1999).…”

“…regardless of peak flows during this period. Finally, if recruitment is from the estuary as is the case in some atyids (Carpenter 1983;Smith 1987;Walsh and Mitchell 1995), larval recruitment will not be observed in the streams studied and immigration of juveniles will be observed later in the season.…”
