Population-Based Surveillance for Acute Liver Failure

Abstract: Our population-based study suggests approximately 1,600 ALF cases occur in the United States each year. Consistent with findings from studies conducted exclusively at liver transplantation centers, APAP-related ALF was the most common etiology. Increased awareness of APAP-related ALF in the medical community may limit future cases. More research is warranted into ALF of undetermined etiology, especially in children.

“…[7][8][9][10] Acetaminophen overdose is the leading cause of acute liver failure. [11][12][13] In 2009, the FDA convened a panel to review the existing evidence and characterize the problem of acetaminophen overdose. The panel concluded that 1) limited evidence is available, 2) the majority of overdoses appear unintentional, and 3) OTC drug labeling is a likely root cause.…”

“…Acetaminophen overdose has surpassed viral hepatitis as the leading cause of acute liver failure in the USA [1][2][3]. From 2000-2007, the American Association of Poison Control Centers reported a 70 % increase in cases of unintentional acetaminophen overdose, not including cases with suicidal intent These data were presented in a poster at the Health Literacy Annual Research Conference (HARC) in Bethesda, MD on Oct 22, 2012.…”

“…Though the injury is potentially reversible, the clinical course often culminates in multiple organ failure which is associated with a poor prognosis. The incidence is between 1 and 6 per million population per year [1]. However this data is predominantly from developed countries, data from developing countries where the etiology of ALF is very different is virtually absent.…”
