Population‐based prevalence, type‐ and age‐specific distribution of HPV in women before introduction of an HPV‐vaccination program in Denmark

Abstract: Knowledge about the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) on a population level is important. We conducted a large population-based study in Denmark to determine the overall and agespecific HPV prevalence, and HPV type distribution in women. Liquid-based cytology samples (SurePath 1 ) were collected consecutively. HPV testing was performed with Hybrid Capture 2 (HC2; Digene) (high-risk and low-risk probes), and LiPA (Innogenetics) was used for genotyping. We analyzed samples from 11,617 women; 94.0% had nor… Show more

“…The HPV prevalence of all 984 samples were 15.4% by BD Onclarity TM HPV Assay, which is similar to previously published prevalence rates on screening samples from Denmark [18,19,20]. Intra-laboratory reproducibility was tested in Copenhagen by comparing the results from two independent tests of each specimen.…”

“…Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is a necessary cause for all cases of cervical cancer; it is the commonest sexually transmitted infection in the world (Schiffman and Castle, 2003) with 12% of females being infected at any time worldwide (Kjaer et al, 2008). The prevalence of HPV infection in other gulf countries was found to be similar to world prevalence (Hajja et al, 2006).…”

“…ervical cancer is the second leading cause of death among women in the world. 1 Despite diagnostic advances in cervical cancer, women unfortunately still die from the disease. Twenty-five thousand women in Europe and 500 000 women worldwide are diagnosed with cervical cancer on a yearly basis, with mortality rates of 25 000 in Europe and 250 000 worldwide.…”
