Indonesia is home to five species of porcupines, three of which are island endemics. While all five species are currently assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, impacts of harvest and trade have not been factored in. To gain a fuller understanding of the porcupine trade in Indonesia, this study examines seizure data of porcupines, their parts and derivatives from January 2013 to June 2020. A total of 39 incidents were obtained amounting to an estimated 452 porcupines. Various confiscated commodities revealed porcupines are traded for consumption, traditional medicine, trophies/charms as well as for privately run wildlife/recreational parks. Targeted hunting of porcupines for commercial international trade was also evident. Porcupines are also persecuted as agricultural pests and wildlife traffickers take advantage of such situations to procure animals for trade. What clearly emerges from this study is that porcupines are being illegally hunted and exploited throughout their range in Indonesia facilitated by poor enforcement and legislative weakness. Porcupines are in decline due to habitat loss, retaliatory killings and uncontrolled poaching. It is therefore crucial that effective conservation measures are taken sooner rather than later to prevent further depletion of these species. Including all porcupines as protected species under Indonesian wildlife laws and listing them in Appendix II of CITES to improve regulation, enforcement and monitoring of domestic and international trade trends involving porcupines in Indonesia would contribute significantly towards this end.

Protected forests in West Java are wider than conservation forests, whereas mammalian diversity in protected forests is as high as mammalian diversity in conservation forests. Mammals in protected forests are not protected by regional protection regulations, while anthropogenic factors in Java are quite high. This is possible that mammals who have high conservation status will experience local extinction. This study aims to determine (i) the composition of mammalian species and (ii) the species that are always found in studies of mammalian diversity in West Java. The study was conducted through a qualitative approach by combining several methods such as interview, camera trapping, sign survey, observation and transect, and collapsible traps. Mammalia in West Java found 54 species, 21 families, and nine orders with details of three species of Artiodactyla, 12 species of Carnivores, seven species of Chiroptera, one species of Dermoptera, one species of Euphotyphla, one species of Pholidota, five species of Primates, 21 species of Rodentia, and three species of Scandentia. The species that are always found in all study locations are nine species, including wild boar, Javan leopard, leopard cat, Javan mongoose, oriental small-clawed otter, Asian palm civet, grizzled leaf monkey, Javan langur, and Javan tree shrew. The results presented here may facilitate improvements in the mammalian diversity database, especially in the non-conservation area.

Biodiversitas 20: 2781-2789. Ciletuh Geopark has high biodiversity but has not been supported by local knowledge about the use of animals to support sustainable development. This study aims to investigate: (i) the number of species that are used, (ii) distribution of local knowledge about animals using, and (iii) the dependency of communities on creatures in Ciletuh Geopark, Ciemas Subdistrict, Sukabumi. Mixed methods of qualitative (semi-structured interviews) and quantitative methods (proportional random sampling) were applied in this study. The community uses 153 species, consisting 58 Avifauna species, 13 mammals species, nine Herpetofauna species, three insects species, 16 species of freshwater fish, 43 species of seawater fish, two Mollusca species, and nine crustacean species. Utilization of fauna is not distributed in each village. Animals using of Avifauna, Herpetofauna, insects, and mammals tend to be utilized by people of Girimukti Village. Seawater fish, Mollusca, and crustaceans tend to be utilized by Ciwaru Village, while freshwater fish tend to be used in each village, except Girimukti and Cibenda Village. Utilization of fauna in Ciemas Subdistrict has begun to be abandoned, although several people still use them.
