Popliteal artery embolization with the Mynx closure device

Abstract: Several different arterial puncture closure devices are available for use after cardiovascular procedures. The main advantages include decrease need of manual compression, reduce patient discomfort, and the time to ambulation. Access site complications are not rare after vascular closure device use. We report a case of popliteal artery emobilization after using an extravascular water soluble plug-mediated vascular puncture closure device. V C 2009 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

“…One patient with intravascular sealant underwent surgical exploration for near occlusion of the ipsilateral superficial femoral artery. A similar complication was reported by Islam and colleagues 3. It is unclear why Fields et al had such a high complication rate after Mynx deployment.…”

“…One patient with intravascular sealant underwent surgical exploration for near occlusion of the ipsilateral superficial femoral artery. Islam et al 3 published a similar case report of intravascular Mynx deposition that resulted in distal popliteal artery occlusion following percutaneous coronary angioplasty. The patient underwent emergency surgical removal of the intravascular sealant with successful recanalization.…”

“…A case of symptomatic embolization to the popliteal artery was recently published. 2 In addition, the US Food and Drug AdministrationϪsponsored data base designed to track possible complications from the use of medical devices (MAUDE) contains Ͼ10 additional cases of possible or probable intravascular embolization. The MAUDE data base also contains reports of several pseudonaneurysms in patients in whom the device was used for closure and a number of instances of balloon detachment.…”

“…However, there are reports of distal embolisation occurring with the Mynx VCD [30,31]. In one single-centre retrospective series of cardiac interventions in 238 patients with the original Mynx device and 190 patients with the Angio-Seal device, there was no difference in the rate of access-related major vascular complications in both groups (2.1 %), but there was a higher rate of device failure in the Mynx cohort (9.2 %) compared to the Angio-Seal cohort (3.7 %) [32].…”
