Ponderomotive streaking of the ionization potential as a method for measuring pulse durations in the XUV domain with fs resolution

Abstract: We present an alternative method for measuring ultrashort extreme-ultraviolet pulses that can be synchronized with an intense infrared pulse. The method, based on photoionization of a target atom by the extremeultraviolet pulse in the presence of the infrared pulse, has a potential accuracy of close to 1 fs and is susceptible to single-shot operation. It is demonstrated on harmonic 15 of a titanium:sapphire laser. The minimum pulse duration that can be measured is limited only by the frequency of the radiation… Show more

“…In this second and current generation of the set up we perform HHG in a cell, focus the VUV radiation into the interaction region and use a magnetic bottle type time of flight electron spectrometer for PES. Side bands in the photoelectron spectra are used to determine the time resolution of the set up (68)(69)(70)(71)(72)(73)(74)(75)(76)(77)(78)(79).…”

“…In the resulting photoelectron spectrum a series of lines, so-called sidebands, are observed on both sides of the normal photoline 27,28 . Since the sidebands are very sensitive to the spatial and temporal overlap and to the physical characteristics of both the XUV and NIR pulses, this type of experiment is widely used for studying multi-photon ionization dynamics 29 as well as for characterizing linearly polarized ionizing FEL pulses 30 . In the present study it is applied to the characterization of the polarization properties of the FEL beam.…”

“…La courte durée des harmoniques a été caractérisée par différentes méthodes indiquant une durée de quelques femtosecondes selon la durée de l'impulsion laser de pompe [1][2][3]. Cette propriété est primordiale pour des applications de type pompe sonde comme par exemple en spectroscopie moléculaire et atomique [4] ou encore en physique du solide [5].…”
