Pomegranate Seed Extract Attenuates Chemotherapy-Induced Acute Nephrotoxicity and Hepatotoxicity in Rats

Abstract: Cisplatin (CDDP), one of the most active cytotoxic agents against cancer, has adverse side effects, such as nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity. The present study was designed to investigate the potential protective effect of pomegranate seed extract (PSE) against oxidative stress caused by CDDP injury of the kidneys and liver by measuring tissue biochemical and antioxidant variables and immunohistochemically testing caspase-3-positive cells. Twenty-four Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 4 groups: control; C… Show more

“…1) and subsequently concentrated with a rotary vacuum evaporator under reduced pressure, lyophilized to obtain powders, and stored at 4°C until assay. The ethanol extract was made of a fine suspension, 100 mg of P. granatum ethanol extract per kilogram body weight dissolved in 300 mL distilled water in three divided doses (100 mL of this suspension every 8 h) for the study [14].…”

“…Pomegranate pericarp (peel, rind) and seeds contain several high-value compounds, particularly punicic acid, punicalgins, flavones, flavonones, and flavanols, with beneficial health promoting potentials (Barberan et al 2006). The pomegranate peel and seed extracts have been shown to prevent liver fibrosis and exhibit anti-inflammatory, anti-mutagenic, and antimicrobial activities (Çayır et al 2011;Zahin et al 2010;Endo et al 2010). The diverse beneficial effects of these biomolecules stimulated their use in numerous novel functional food formulations that replies to the local and international market tendencies.…”

“…The animals in the Cis group received a single-dose injection of Cis (Cisplatinum Ebewe, 0.5 mg/mL) (7 mg/kg), administered intraperitoneally, and were sacrificed five days later (14). A single dose of Ib (Remicade®; Schering plough, USA) (7 mg/kg) was given to the CIN group rats 72 h prior to Cis injection (5).…”
