Pomegranate Peel Extract Reduces Cisplatin-Induced Toxicity and Oxidative Stress in Primary Neuron Culture

Abstract: Objective: Cancer is the most common cause of death after cardiovascular diseases. Cisplatin used in most types of cancer produces neurotoxicity. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of pomegranate peel extract (1) in different doses, as potent antioxidants, on the prevention of neurotoxicity due to cisplatin, which is frequently used in cancer treatment. Methods: In our study, newborn rat cortex was used. 2 hours following the application of PPE at 200, 300 and 400 mg/mL, neurotoxicity was establ… Show more

“…Besides, PP (200 mg/ kg) protected against aluminum chloride-induced neurotoxicity in rat models through the reduced accumulation of aluminum together with enhancement of antioxidant effect and anti-apoptotic proteins namely Bcl-2 (Moneim, 2012). Also, PP prevented the neurotoxicity induced by cisplatin, used in cancer treatment, mainly due to its antioxidant effect, and suggestive of its beneficial inclusion in cisplatinbased chemoradiotherapy after further pharmacological and clinical studies (Cinar et al, 2021).…”

“…The most abundant ET is PUN, which exists as alpha and beta isomers in nearly equal proportions. Upon hydrolysis, one PUN molecule gives a total of three EA molecules, via the intermediates punicalin and gallagic acid [17][18][19] (Figure 2).…”

“…So far, different types of biological activities such as antimutagenic, antiproliferative, anti-inflammatory, and chemo-preventive properties were stated for pomegranate peel extract (PPE) according to chemical composition (El-Kady et al, 2021;Mastrogiovanni et al, 2019;Viswanath et al, 2019). Furthermore, low toxicity and high safety have been reported by means of in vivo and in vitro studies (Cinar et al, 2021;Hasnaoui, 2022;Mastrogiovanni et al, 2019).…”

“…So far, different types of biological activities such as antimutagenic, antiproliferative, anti‐inflammatory, and chemo‐preventive properties were stated for pomegranate peel extract (PPE) according to chemical composition (El‐Kady et al, 2021 ; Mastrogiovanni et al, 2019 ; Viswanath et al, 2019 ). Furthermore, low toxicity and high safety have been reported by means of in vivo and in vitro studies (Cinar et al, 2021 ; Hasnaoui, 2022 ; Mastrogiovanni et al, 2019 ). Therefore, it seems that PPE has enough potential for shelf life enhancement in food products (Belgacem et al, 2021 ; Kumar et al, 2022 , 2023 ) and also in formulation of functional foods and nutraceutical supplements (Moussaoui et al, 2021 ).…”
