“…In vivo, different mechanisms have been suggested for antiatherogenic activity of pomegranate extractions, especially juice, such as reduction of oxidant enzyme activities (Schubert et al, 1999), inducing antioxidant enzymes expression (Khateeb, Gantman, Kreitenberg, Aviram, & Fuhrman, 2010), enhancing nitric oxide activity , inhibiting cellular uptake of oxidized LDL and cholesterol biosynthesis (Fuhrman et al, 2005). However, the present in-vitro study showed a direct inhibitory effect of the W fraction and not PSOs of pomegranate on copper-induced LDL oxidation.…”

“…Furthermore, considering oxidative modification hypothesis and role of Ox-LDL in atherosclerosis (Pirillo, Norata, & Catapano, 2013), many studies have been conducted on using various pomegranate-derived products as natural antioxidants to improve oxidative stress and decrease atherosclerosis risk factors. Invivo and in-vitro studies have demonstrated attenuating and protective influences of the pomegranate products on LDL oxidation and atherosclerosis (Aviram et al, 2000;Basu & Penugonda, 2009;Davidson et al, 2009;Fuhrman, Volkova, & Aviram, 2005Ignarro, Byrns, Sumi, De Nigris, & Napoli, 2006;Sezer, Akçay, Ilanbey, Yıldırım, & Sözmen, 2007) through various mechanisms, including induction of paraoxonase-1 (Aviram et al, 2004) and peroxisome proliferators activated receptor (Huang et al, 2005) activities as well as endothelial nitric-oxide synthase availability , and reduction of LDL aggregation (Aviram et al, 2000) and cellular uptake of oxidized LDL (Fuhrman et al, 2005). However, there is little information about direct effects of PSO on preventing LDL oxidation.…”

“…Also, participants in the current study were individuals with normal lipid levels compared with previous studies where participants had elevated lipid levels (15,16). A previous study has demonstrated that the higher the cardiovascular risk, the greater the changes occurring in risk factors such as cholesterol (20). Individuals in the current study were also normoglycaemic and CRP was within normal levels at baseline.…”

“…Research conducted on atherosclerotic mice indicated that PJ supplementation reduced the size of atherosclerotic lesions and inhibited disease progression (13)(14)(15). Research on patients with cardiovascular disease demonstrated that following PJ supplementation, low density lipoprotein (LDL) levels were reduced (16,17), stress induced ischemia (18) and vascular thickness decreased (19), while positive findings were particularly evident in patients at higher risk of coronary heart disease (20). In healthy individuals, PJ consumption reduced the potential for LDL aggregation, which represents an important step towards formation of foam cells and thus vascular thrombi (13).…”

“…The pomegranate fruit has been commercialized and can be found as juice, jellies, wine. The wide adoption of the pomegranate is due to the recent studies that mentioned it that contains a high amount of antioxidants which are beneficial to our health in many ways [3][4][5][6]. Its great flavor and health benefits have made it a great candidate for those who search natural healthy foods [7].…”
