Polyvinyl alcohol – Zedo gum edible film: Physical, mechanical and thermal properties

Abstract: The effects of different percentages of Zedo gum (ZG) (10, 20, and 30 w/w%) on the properties of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films by casting method were investigated in this study. Physical, thermal, optical as well as mechanical properties of neat PVA, PVA/ZG and neat ZG films were also characterized. All blend PVA/ZG films produced homogeneous, flexible and transparent films, while neat ZG could not form flexible films and films were opaque. Moreover, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and thermal b… Show more

“…The most important goal of CMC/ZG film as a biodegradable sample is to act as a shielding layer for food packaging which increases product integrity and water resistance, subsequently enhancing the shelf life (Pirouzifard et al, 2020). With regard to Table 3, the WS of the pure CMC/ZG film was 86.25 ± 0.03%, which is in accordance with the quantities announced by Razmjoo et al (2021) and Bazzaz et al (2021). The hydrophilic nature and existence of polar groups of the polysaccharides and hydrocolloids are the major proofs of the high WS of CMC/ZG films.…”

“…In addition, CMC/ZG composite films which incorporated with FAE or LVE exhibit considerable peaks at 3500–4000 cm −1 owing to the carboxylic anions in the structure of the films were enhanced. Razmjoo et al (2021) evaluated the effect of physicomechanical and thermal characteristics on the polyvinyl alcohol/ZG edible film. They concluded incorporation of ZG into polyvinyl alcohol leads to remarkable alteration in the intensity and position of the peaks, which demonstrates appropriate mixing between the two polymers (Razmjoo et al, 2021).…”

“…In addition, different signals were observed at 2933.1 cm −1 , 1721.1 cm −1 , 1655.1 cm −1 , 1564.4 cm −1 , 1424.3 cm −1 , 1370.7 cm −1 , 1327.4 cm −1 , 1249.1 cm −1 , 1086.2 cm −1 , 1032.6 cm −1 , 958.4 cm −1 , and 836.8 cm −1 . The signal at 2933.1 cm −1 corresponded to the stretching of the alkyl (C-H) group of PVA [ 57 ]. The signals positioned at 1564.4 cm −1 and 1424.3 cm −1 ascribed to bending vibration of -CH 2 .…”

“…Elastic modulus (EM) is the characteristic of film rigidity. The equipment and the method of preparing films for testing are similar to the determination of tensile strength and elongation at break [ 507 ]. The elastic modulus is determined by the ratio of the normal force to the corresponding deformation within the limits of proportionality [ 508 ].…”
