Polyvinyl alcohol film with chlorine dioxide microcapsules can be used for blueberry preservation by slow-release of chlorine dioxide gas

Abstract: IntroductionChlorine dioxide (ClO2) is a safe and efficient bactericide with unique advantages in reducing foodborne illnesses, inhibiting microbial growth, and maintaining the nutritional quality of food. However, gaseous ClO2 is sensitive to heat, vibration, and light, which limits its application.MethodsIn this study, a ClO2 precursor-stabilized ClO2 aqueous solution was encapsulated by the double emulsion method, and a high-performance ClO2 self-releasing polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film was prepared to invest… Show more

“…Various methods, including physical, chemical, and enzymatic modifications, have been employed to enhance the functional properties of cellulose and hemicellulose, allowing for their broader utilization in the food industry. Su et al ( 2 ) found that cellulose and hemicellulose edible films with 10% microcapsule content showed the best overall performance, improving mechanical properties, thermal stability, and barrier properties. The films effectively inhibited Listeria monocytogenes (93.69%) and Escherichia coli (95.55%) and suppressed the growth of Staphylococcus griseus .…”

“…This breakdown and destruction of amino acids, in turn, control the synthesis of microbial proteins. ClO 2 can interact with bacterial DNA and RNA, eventually leading to bacterial death (Su et al, 2023). Recent studies have reported that ClO 2 can significantly improve the fruit quality of kiwifruit, strawberries, and mangoes (Li, Zhou, Chu, Lan, & Xie, 2020; Park et al, 2019; Zhang et al, 2019).…”

“…Blueberries, recognized as the "Queen of Fruits" and listed among 5 "Healthy Fruits for Humanity" by the FAO, possess cancer-ghting, prevent cardiovascular diseasepreventing, and neurological decline-preventing properties. [1][2][3][4][5] Consequently, the development of packaging materials capable of preserving the freshness of blueberries during storage. 6,7 The detrimental effects of synthetic and petroleum-based plastic materials on the marine environment, human health, and species diversity are well documented.…”
