Advances in preconcentration/removal of environmentally relevant heavy metal ions from water and wastewater by sorbents based on polyurethane foamAbstract: An increased interest in the removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous media is encountered due to their toxicity and negative impacts on ecosystems, human health and economic activities. A variety of processes may be used for the removal of heavy metal ions from water and wastewater, such as chemical precipitation, ion exchange, adsorption, membrane processes, etc. However, the removal efficiencies of heavy metals by adsorption depend on several factors such as initial loads of heavy metals in the influent, purpose of treatment (drinking/industrial water production, wastewater treatment for disposal or recycling), costs of the overall process, and properties and conditions for regeneration of the sorbent materials. In this context, the use of polyurethane foams as heavy metal ion sorbents is of a special interest because they provide versatile applications in heavy metal effluent management. This study reviews relevant published researches that are concerned with new sorbents based on polyurethane foams applied in batch and dynamic systems for separation and/or preconcentration of heavy metal ions in environmental aqueous media. This review is divided into the following sections: synthesis of polyurethane foams; physical and chemical properties of polyurethane foams; preconcentration of pollutant metal ions from environmental aqueous media by different types of polyurethane foam (untreated, loaded, reacted and composite polyurethane foams); the applicability of sorbents based on polyurethane foams for water and wastewater treatment; comparison of sorbents based on polyurethane foam with other sorbents for heavy metal ion removal.

The temperature dependences of the heat capacity of partially crystalline linear polyure thanes based on 1,6 hexamethylenediisocyanate with butane 1,4 diol and hexane 1,6 diol were studied for the first time in a temperature range of 6-460 K by the methods of adiabatic vacuum and dynamic calorimetry. Physical changes in the state of polyurethanes were revealed and characterized; the standard thermodynamic functions, namely, C p°( T ), H°(T ) -H°(0), S°(T ), and G°(T ) -H°(0), were calculated from the obtained experimental data in the temperature range from Т → 0 to 460 K for the polymers in the crystalline, glassy, highly elastic, and liquid states. The energies of combustion of the polymers were measured by the bomb calorimetry method, and the standard thermodynamic characteristics of their formation at 298.15 K were calculated. The thermodynamic characteristics of bulk polycondensation of 1,6 hexamethylenediisocyanate with butane 1,4 diol and hexane 1,6 diol to form linear ali phatic polyurethanes {4,6} and {6,6} were determined in the range from Т → 0 to 350 K at р° = 0.1 MPa. The thermodynamic properties of the polyurethanes under study and polymers of isomeric structure were compared.Key words: polyurethanes based on 1,6 hexamethylenediisocyanate with butane 1,4 diol and hexane 1,6 diol, heat capacity, enthalpy, entropy, Gibbs function, calorimetry, thermo dynamics.Polyurethanes (PUs) are among the most significant industrial polymers 1,2 and used for designing new promis ing materials. 3-5In the present time, one of the main methods for industrial production of linear PUs is the reaction of diisocyanates with diols 1 that affords m,n PUs. Com bined studies by precision AVC methods are necessary to compare the thermodynamic properties of aliphatic polyurethanes, to study dependences of these proper ties on the composition, structure, and physical state, and to prepare related composite materials. In the present paper, an off-line preconcentration procedure for the determination of cadmium and lead by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) is proposed. Polyurethane foam (PUF) functionalized with o-aminophenol (o-AP) followed by Pyrazolone (Pyr) packed in a minicolumn was used as a sorbent material. The metals were retained on the modified PUF, from which it could be eluted and effectively preconcentrated. The detection limits were 0.072 and 0.016 µg L -1 for Pb and Cd respectively. Enrichment factors were 250 and 319 for lead and cadmium respectively. The procedure has been applied successfully to metal determination in water samples, fish liver and reference material.
