Polytope Sector-Based Synthesis and Analysis of Microstructural Architectures With Tunable Thermal Conductivity and Expansion

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to (1) introduce an approach, called polytope sector-based synthesis (PSS), for synthesizing 2D or 3D microstructural architectures that exhibit a desired bulk-property directionality (e.g., isotropic, cubic, orthotropic, etc.), and (2) provide general analytical methods that can be used to rapidly optimize the geometric parameters of these architectures such that they achieve a desired combination of bulk thermal conductivity and thermal expansion properties. Although the methods intr… Show more

“…Wei et al (2016) designed six types of periodic planar lattices inspired by rotational symmetry in crystallography and presented an analytical solution for the effective CTE and biaxial stiffness of pin-jointed planar lattices. Hopkins et al (2016) designed 2-D and 3-D microstructural architectures that can be tuned to achieve specific thermal expansion coefficients from positive to negative.…”

“…Concrete blueprints for three-dimensional structures showing isotropic behavior were suggested later14. Refinements and two-dimensional macroscopic model structures composed of bimetallic beams were published as well1516171822. Discussed theoretically a related two-dimensional structure composed of bimetallic strips showing a negative effective compressibility (at fixed temperature).…”

“…Triangular and square motifs are natural candidates for building the first hierarchical level of 2D PXCMs (Fig. 1(d)) because of they can be tessellated to cover a plane 25,26 . However, the choice of the support structures for these building blocks is not straightforward.…”
