Polystyrene Layers Grafted to Epoxy-Modified Silicon Surfaces

Abstract: Carboxylic acid-and anhydride-terminated polystyrenes of different molecular weights from 4500 to 672 000 were grafted from melt onto silicon substrates modified with epoxysilane monolayer. The grafted chains are densely packed with a density close to the known value for the bulk material. The tethered polymer layers are very smooth, uniform, mechanically stable, and cover homogeneously the modified silicon. At the degree of polymerization (N) close to the critical molecular weight, the grafting process is the… Show more

“…Molecular structures and peak assignment, as reported in Table 1, are shown. [31]. The ability of functionalized particles to be dispersed in organic matrices was tested by simply mixing pristine TiO 2 , TiO 2 -PA, TiO 2 -EA and TiO 2 -MA with water and diethyl ether.…”

“…The grafting density can be also defined as a function of the distance between grafted points (D): 14,31 The size of an isolated chain in a good solvent is given by the Flory radius where N is the number of monomer units and a is the statistical segment length. …”

“…14,15 High grafting densities and relatively thick layers are difficult to realize with the grafting to technique due to the repulsive forces between polymer chains that are already attached and non-grafted polymer chains that are entering. Radical polymerization, and especially atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), is a very suitable procedure to grow polymer brushes from a surface because it allows a good control over the grafting density and brush thickness.…”

“…28 Immobilization of polymers using spin coating or casting films on solid substrates using silane coupling agents has been developed. [29][30][31] However, the orientation, molecular packing, and smoothness remain insufficient for coating in surface nanotechnology. In this respect, self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films are attractive because of their closely packed and well-ordered structures.…”
